Filing Insurance Claims

If you have suffered loss as a result of Tropical Storm Helene, consider the following steps for insurance claims:

  1. Take pictures and video to document your loss.
  2. READ YOUR INSURANCE POLICIES BEFORE YOU MAKE A CLAIM.  Damage may or may not be covered by your insurance, depending on what caused the damage. Insurance policies have different coverage, or no coverage, for specific causes, and you do not want your insurance to deny a valid claim because of the words used to initially report the claim.  If you do not have a copy of your entire policy, then request it from your agent.
  3. Contact your insurance agent or company to make a claim and open a file.
  4. It may be best to describe your loss as caused by the storm without further details.  You may not want to list any specific cause like rain, flood water, or fallen trees until there is an investigation of your claim.
  5. Protect your property from further damage if possible.
  6. Do not sign anything unless you understand it.

UPDATE:

For disaster aid, FEMA may not accept a loss claim unless you provide a copy of the property insurance company’s letter stating that the loss/damage is not covered under any applicable policy or policies.
